PSM200 Smith Machine
As a non-athlete I have trained with weights for 60 years at Y's, university gyms, and at home. Over the years, injuries and arthritis (from running with dogs and falling on icy sidewalks) have drastically reduced my training. At the age of 80 I bought this Smith machine to help me do squats with less stress on my knees. For that purpose it works very well. In my case, positioning my feet slightly ahead of the bar results in surprisingly comfortable squats down to parallel, albeit with light weights and high reps. I wish I had purchased something like this when I was a youngster of 50. Assembly was easy. Just lay everything out and look at the pictures. The machine has adjustable top and bottom catches for "free" squats, deadlifts, shrugs and bench presses. The distance between “free” supports is about 45.5 inches, outside to outside. You really need a 7 foot bar to use this comfortably with a “free” bar. The specs say it has a 400 lb. limit, so this isn't designed for big time power training. If that's not good enough, you really owe it to yourself to join a hardcore gym! This machine is limited to olympic plates - - - there are no removable olympic plate sleeves. This is a questionable design choice, since the machine is an appealing step up for the person who started with a 110 lb. "exercise set" and bench. But then, maybe people don't start that way any longer. :-) Without any plates loaded, the guided bar weighs 25 lb. I can't see any design flaws, the materials are sufficiently robust for the intended purpose, and the "fit and finish" are very good. I'm hoping this will serve me well for another 20 years and then move on to some other exercise enthusiast. ;-)
